Baby Shoes

by Andy Miller

I distinctly remember a Christmas six years ago like it was yesterday.  My wife, Heather, and I were blessed with one incredible child and were hoping for another child.  We have had many ups and downs over the years in our pursuit to grow our family.  To be honest, there were many times we sat back and wondered where God was in the midst of our struggle.

On this particular Christmas we drove to Chicago to spend Christmas with my family.  All of our family was gathering in Aurora, Illinois, to be with my Mom and Dad in the home we grew up in.  Whenever families are able to gather together, it is so important to value these moments.

While we were in Chicago, Heather and I were waiting on a call from our doctor to inform us if she was pregnant.  We were lucky enough to have both of our extended families together in Chicago.  This meant twice the fun as we celebrated Christmas with both sides of our families.

As we moved from each home to each party throughout the week we were there, we both had a highly expectant hope we would get a phone call telling us that we were expecting our second child.  We wanted to be blessed with a child more than anything.

We got the call and received good news—double the good news!  From the preliminary test the doctors assumed that we most likely could be having twins. We were overjoyed!  That year for Christmas we bought two pairs of baby shoes for both sides of our families to share in the blessings that would soon be Hadley and Hudson.  Our lives has been forever blessed by these two precious children.

How about you?  Are you at a place where you feel like you have lost hope?  Are you in a place in your life where you feel like God is not there or He's hearing your prayers?  We do live in a broken world.  However, God is still in charge.  He is unfolding His plan to make all things right.  On that Christmas past we were able to sense Him doing that “righting” in our life.  We are in the Christmas season—a time when we celebrate the coming of our King.  For all of us it also needs to be a reminder of the living hope we have in Him.  Don’t give up this year.  Continue to have hope.  He IS there working behind the scenes to make all things right.
